I know you have all been waiting for this one...how to do an at-home peel!!! By now we are all feeling kinda gross. You haven't put on makeup since this stay at home order began. You have roots for days, there are two lash extensions remaining on your right eye and three on your left. Your daughter painted your toenails (and we love them no matter what they look like). Lets face it, we all need a pick-me-up. An at-home peel is a great way to refresh your appearance in a long term way. You will notice an improvement in tone, texture, fine lines and wrinkles, and your no makeup wearing self will look brighter and more rested. Now let me be clear, peeling is not meant to be an at-home procedure, and I'm not suggesting you perform a TCA or Modified Jessner Peel in your bathroom, but there are ways you can produce a decent peel at home safely. Many cosmeceutical lines are realizing the need for this type of at-home product and they have come up with some amazing solutions!
If you like the idea of a peel, but not the downtime, you can choose to try a peel product like Skin Better Science AlphaRet Exfoliating Peel Pads. These pads are highly effective for fighting the signs of aging and by far one of my absolute favorite new products. They can be used on an ongoing basis up to 3 times per week with visible change as early as 2 weeks after the first use! Skin Better Science has truly perfected delivery systems, so their clinical results are visible in a much shorter period of time than most other lines. Another great Peel Pad is Jan Marini Multi Acid Resurfacing Pads. This brand of pads combines 4 different acids to refine the skin and produce a healthy glow. Because one of the 4 acids happens to be a high concentration of salicylic acid, it is particularly great for those battling acne. Both come with 30 pads which roughly equates to 2.5-3 months worth depending on how often you use them. The Skin better Science Pads retail for $95 and the Jan Marini pads for $88. Neither will produce visible sloughing though, so if you like to see the skin shed I have a different option for you.
Dr. Zein Obagi is a pioneer in the skincare product world. The Obagi System's use of Retinoic acid and fairly aggressive approach to exfoliation changed the way homecare products factored into procedure preparation. After many years and much research Dr. Obagi relaunched a more streamlined and elegant set of protocols as ZO Skin Health Inc. Among the many amazing products in this line is a product called Advanced Radical Night Repair. Used as directed, this product is a great nightly retinol-based treatment product. Used off label though, it can produce a really decent peel.
I have an old friend who recently contacted me to ask about doing a home peel. I agreed to help a sista out provided she allow me to document her journey here on the blog. She agreed, but requested that she stay anonymous, so we will just call her Heather. To give you some background, Heather's last peel was 15 years ago, I know that because I'm the one who gave it to her. Heather doesn't follow a specific regimen and hasn't done any other professional skincare treatments over the years. Her lack of routine is actually perfect for our purposes, because it only reiterates how safe this home peel is for anyone.
Before After: brighter skin, reduced redness, refinement of lines around the eye
Before beginning, you obviously need to have ZO Skin Health Inc. Advanced Radical night repair but also a mild cleanser, a rich moisturizer and a sunscreen product with an SPF of 30 or better. Once you have your supplies ready to go, you will start by proceeding with your normal nighttime skincare regimen. Cleanse, tone, treatment serum and moisturizer should all be used normally, then as a last step, apply 3 pumps of Advanced Radical Night Repair and massage it in avoiding the eye are and the lips. Wait one hour then apply 3 more pumps again, avoiding the eyes and the lips. Repeat this process for three consecutive nights. Three days after the last application of Advanced Radical Night Repair you should begin peeling. Peeling lasts several days, and is fairly mild (think eraser dust VS. Sheets), but results are pretty amazing! Once you have started to peel you will want to only use mild products as active product can sting. You should keep your skin well hydrated throughout the peel process, and NEVER pick at or remove skin prematurely. Once your peeling is complete, you can return to your regular products. If you like your result, but want even more, you can wait four weeks and repeat the whole process again.
Peeling day 2 and 3
Peeling is the cornerstone of anti-aging treatments. It is how we are able to achieve that beautiful youthful dewy glow that everyone is after. It is how we refine pore size, diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, lighten pigmented lesions from sun damage and in some cases clear acne and improve acne scarring. Peeling in moderation and consistently, can have amazing long term results, and improve your overall skin health for the better!
