If your teenage years were anything at all like mine, you spent the summer months trying to get a “healthy tan.” Boy, if I only knew then what I know now! I spent endless hours at the Jersey Shore baking myself with the help of Baby Oil mixed with Iodine only to wind up with blistered pinkish purple sunburns that peeled away and left me with permanent damage and not even a hint of a tan. As the years roll by, I find myself wondering why I tortured my poor skin repeatedly knowing that the results would be the same every single time. They say hindsight is 20/20, I concur. I have grown wiser in my adulthood and know that I have to protect my skin from harmful UV/A, UV/B, UV/C and HEV light, but I still have to deal with the “sins of my youth.” But how? Fortunately, for you, I have an answer.
Surface level sun damage is seen as brown spots and wrinkles, but did you know that sun damage also appears as diffuse redness and broken capillaries? All of these maladies of the epidermis can be corrected with a good plan of action. when I see patients that have neglected their skin‘s needs their entire life and at age 50 want to know what they can do to get skin like mine, I know that they need the ultimate skin do-over...resurfacing.
Resurfacing is the most efficient way of addressing all of the most visible signs of aging and sun damage in one treatment. Using tunable Erbium laser energy, the skin is ablated at customized depths to erase fine lines and wrinkles, brown spots, redness, and undesirable texture (think of the orange peel texture on the chin). As an added bonus, resurfacing produces enough heat to build collagen and refine pore size as well. Yes please! what’s the catch, you ask? This epidermal reset comes with some downtime.
I know, “Nobody’s Got Time for That.” See what I did there? Listen, I have a truth bomb for you, the damage you have done to your skin took years to accumulate, and you can not expect to correct it without any downtime. Period. Instead, schedule it appropriately. A global pandemic that calls for people to stay home seems like a great opportunity to fit a corrective resurfacing into your hectic lifestyle...just saying. Depending on how much correction is needed, the average patient can expect about a week of downtime. When strategically planned, its really not a huge interruption in life (I speak from experience).
Healing from Erbium resurfacing is not necessarily fun, but it’s also not painful. It looks far worse than it feels. Keep in mind, the worse I beat you up, the better you’ll look in the end. I would describe it as uncomfortable at its worst. It ironically feels a bit like a sunburn. You should also expect some swelling That will last about 2-3 days. Swelling can feel heavy, but sleeping propped up and following post care instructions will minimize inflammation.
Erbium resurfacing can be performed in-office with local nerve blocks and medications to keep you comfortable, or in the operating room in conjunction with surgical procedures like facelifts. Combining resurfacing with surgery can significantly enhance outcome. The healthier your skin is, the more natural your results become. Because we specialize in natural looking results, we often pair surgery with multiple non-surgical modalities before during and after your surgery. Whether you decide to have resurfacing in the office or during a surgical procedure, you will need to have a consultation to determine candidacy and to go over post procedure instructions. In my office, we include 2-3 LED light treatments following your resurfacing that stimulate collagen and speed the healing process by reducing inflammation. This also allows your provider to check your progress.
I know how intimidating this might seem, after all, I’ve had it done myself and can assure you I was pretty nervous. Even several years later, though I am enjoying the enduring results of my resurfacing. I always counsel patients that when you follow post procedure instructions, have regular maintenance, and get on a good home care regimen, you can expect 5-7 years of longevity. That means approximately one year for each day of downtime...worth it, right?

It is not lost on me that all of this costs money. Not everyone will feel the same, but I look at good skincare as an investment in myself. I encourage patients to have a plan so you can prepare financially and physically. Maybe you make it a goal for after the holidays, or next spring. Maybe it’s something you save up for and do next year. My point is that there is no reason you have to deny yourself improvement of skin health. A little planning goes a long way, and just look at these results!
